where will we go after we ruin this planet?

A total of 723 confirmed extrasolar planets have been found since the first was spotted in 1995, according to a tally kept by the website http://exoplanets.org.

More than 3,000 sightings by the specialist Kepler orbital telescope await confirmation.

So far, no exoplanet spotted has the potential to be a home away from home; a rocky planet that orbits in a balmy zone, enabling water to exist in liquid form and thus nurture life as we know it.

atomic bomb

a couple years ago, when i lived in Chicago, i attended some writing workshops at my local public library (Neighborhood Writing Alliance). one of our assignments one week was to write a haiku. i wrote this one:

Haiku

1946
summer in Hiroshima
and Nagasaki

it was never workshopped because the instructor wanted to tell everyone (mostly retired people from the area) about the Occupy Movement.

this is one of two pieces i've written about atomic bombs, the first was Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds. Initiative Games is relevant here too.

more on boil order and water

Under a boil-water advisory (BWA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that water be brought to a rolling boil for one minute before it is consumed in order to kill protozoa, bacteria and viruses. At altitudes above 2,000 meters, boiling should be extended to 3 minutes, as the lower temperature of the boiling point at high altitudes requires more time to kill such organisms.

BWAs are typically issued when monitoring of water being served to consumers detects E. coli or other microbiological indicators of sewage contamination. Another reason for a BWA is a failure of distribution system integrity evidenced by a loss of system pressure. While loss of pressure does not necessarily mean the water has been contaminated, it does mean that pathogens may be able to enter the piped-water system and thus be carried to consumers.

Some countries, like Canada, have publicly available maps showing the locations of boil water advisories

inconceivable magic

"Where kids in kapok ice-skate and play at Secret City as the sun
Sets before dinner, the snow on fields turns pink and under the
      hatched ice
The water slides darkly and over it a never before seen liquefaction
      of the sun
In a chemical yellow greener than sulfur a flash of petroleum by-
      product
Unbelievable, unwanted and as lovely as though someone you knew
      all your life
Said the one inconceivable thing and then went on washing dishes:
      the sky
Flows with impersonal passion and loosening jet trails (eyes tearing
      from the cold)"

-James Schuyler, from The Crystal Lithium

*****
It is really hot here, the heat index is above 100 during the day.

This is one of the times that can yield wonderful surprises - everyone is trying to avoid the heat and wishing they were somewhere else (including me), causing people (and myself) to mentally be "somewhere else." In spite of our will to avoid the world it is still turning, making, dying, happening, and creating - this is why surprises happen now (as they can any time). But, it has to be the kind of surprise that is so great it takes us out from our hiding places and shows us that even an unwanted world can be beautiful, making the event that much more magical....
